Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple stands on the eastern coast of Pamban Island, reverenced as one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. According to the Ramayana, after defeating the demon king Ravana in Lanka, Lord Rama was advised by revered sages to worship Lord Shiva to absolve the sin of Brahmahatya.
While Lord Hanuman flew to Mount Kailash to fetch a Shiva Lingam, Mother Sita consecrated a sacred Lingam molded from the sanctified sands of the island (the Ramalingam). When Hanuman returned with a crystal Lingam from Kailash (the Viswalingam), Lord Rama ordained that the Viswalingam must always be worshipped first—a sacred tradition dutifully maintained by the temple priests to this day.

The outer corridor (third prakaram) of Ramanathaswamy Temple is an architectural triumph unmatched anywhere in the world. Spanning a cumulative length of approximately 3,850 feet (over 1.2 kilometers) with more than 1,212 intricately carved granite pillars, the corridor creates an awe-inspiring vista of receding stone symmetry.
Engineered during the 18th century under the patronage of Muthuramalinga Setupati, the sheer logistics of transporting massive granite blocks across the ocean to a sand-bound island remains one of ancient India's greatest civil engineering feats.
Strict Temple Dress Code Guidelines
By order of the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department of Tamil Nadu:
- • Men: Dhoti with Angavastram (cloth draped over shoulders) or traditional Kurta-Pyjama. Modern jeans, bermudas, and shorts are strictly forbidden.
- • Women: Saree, Half-saree, or Salwar Kameez with Dupatta. Western casuals and leggings are prohibited.
- • Electronics: Mobile phones and cameras are banned inside the temple; cloakrooms are available at East Gopuram.
