Ramanathaswamy Temple: The 22 Holy Wells (Theerthams) Step-by-Step Order
The sacred island of Rameshwaram possesses 64 holy theerthams (bodies of water) according to the Skanda Purana, with 24 considered pre-eminent, and 22 situated directly inside the inner prakarams of the Ramanathaswamy Temple.
The Mandatory Ritual Sequence:
- Step 1 (Agni Theertham): Commence with a holy dip in the sea at Agni Theertham on the eastern beach facing the East Gopuram. Pilgrims who wish to perform ancestral rituals (Thila Tharpanam) do so here before proceeding.
- Step 2 (Enter Temple in Wet Clothes): Devotees enter the temple premises carrying a change of dry clothes in a plastic bag. Authorized temple servers operate at each of the 22 holy wells.
- Step 3 (The 22 Wells Snanam): The sequence begins at Mahalakshmi Theertham (Southern corridor) and moves systematically through all wells, concluding at the highly revered Kodi Theertham.
- Step 4 (Change of Clothes & Darshan): Immediately after the 22nd well, devotees proceed to changing rooms to wear dry, traditional clothes before entering the sanctum sanctorum for Lord Ramanathaswamy and Goddess Parvathavarthini darshan.
